Detroit's Gospel Legacies

ree

Growing up, I have had the privilege of being exposed to some of the best that gospel music had to offer. There's nothing like hearing some good 'ole gospel music to ease the stress and anxieties of life. Why, it was normal to hear great choir singing like Rev. Charles Nicks and the St. James Baptist Church choir, Donald Vails and the Choraleers, Evangelist Esther Smith and the International Gospel Center choir.

We can't leave out Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, Prof. Herman Harris, Rudolph Stansfield and Rev. Andre "Sonny" Woods. And who can forget "The Maestro" himself, the late, great Min. Thomas Whitfield. These are just a few to mention. So I guess you can say that I have been spoiled!

When I was a student at Mumford High School, here in Detroit, we used to have gospel concerts for the students and the community. These concerts were performed by Mumford Alumni like The Winans, The Clark Sisters, Derrick Brinkley and family, and many others. (And for the record, Fred Hammond and Keith Station of Commissioned are also alumni). These artists were all ministering in one night!!!

These concerts were opened with Mumford's own gospel choir (of which I had the honor to start it). Needless to say, we had an awesome time!!!

When I look back over the years, I consider myself to be truly blessed. In fact, the City of Detroit is truly blessed! Detroit may have it's shortcomings, but music isn't one of them. There's a good reason why we are known as the "capital of gospel music". We rock!!!

To all of the musicians who have paved the way, thank you!!!

Perhaps there's a Detroit musician, singer, or choir that has been a blessing to you. Please feel free to share. I would simply love to hear from YOU!
