Healthy Holidays to You!!!

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

Well here we are again...the peak of the holiday season. As usual, many are making preparations for how they will celebrate. And yes, that includes what we're gonna eat! (big smile!) Enjoying a well-cooked, hearty meal is the norm here in America. We love to gather around the table with family and friends and just share our lives over a big plate (or plates) of food.

Time for more cakes, pies, cookies, turkey (or maybe switch up to ham this time) and dressing (don’t forget the cranberry sauce), macaroni and cheese, collard greens…. (oh my goodness) you know, the whole dinner spread!

While we may LOVE a good table spread, oftentimes this spread encompasses foods that are not prepared in our best interest. Who doesn’t love that honey-roasted glazed ham, the cornbread dressing topped with thick brown gravy, macaroni and cheese with enough cheese to clog a bull’s heart. Let’s not forget Grandma’s sweet potato pies (made with real sugar), homemade chocolate cakes and cookies...am I making you hungry yet? Collard greens or mustard, loaded with fatty meats and salts. Again, foods that are not prepared in our best interest.

Though I am not a cook, I have learned and am still learning, what’s good for my health. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying not to eat these things. I am saying choose a healthier way to prepare such dishes. Moderation is the key. There are healthier alternatives to preparing your favorite dish. You just have to do some research. Try recipes that call for less sugar or no sugar at all. Lay off the salt as much as possible. Include more fruits and vegetables. And don’t forget your water!

I know, I know it’s not as much fun. But it’s for your own good. Your health (and mine too) will thank you for it later!
