Every day is a day of thanksgiving....
Being a musician, I have played and sung this song many times; particularly around the Thanksgiving holiday. And you know what? EVERY day IS a day of thanksgiving. Yes, really! Going through what I'm going through - chemotherapy treatments and various doctor appointments - I can truly say with conviction that we should be thankful every day.
When I go for my medical appointments, I see so many people who are sick and afflicted. My heart goes out to them. It makes me grateful to just be alive. That is a testament in itself ---I’m alive!!
"In every situation [no matter what the circumstances] be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (Amplified Bible)
We are taught, even as young children, to say "please"and "thank you". It's just good manners! Well, the same principle applies with God. We should always express our thanks to Him for all of His many, many - did I say "MANY?" - many blessings bestowed on us. So many, we can't count them all. We have our health, regardless as to what condition it may be in. We have our mind. Our bodies function, primarily, in the way they were designed to function. The Lord has blessed us to have a safe home to live in. The list goes on and on. So it's just good manners to say "thank you" just the same.
When we face the challenges of life, it's difficult to be grateful. Difficult, but not impossible! Sure, your feet may hurt; people may get on your nerves; the bills are due. And this social distancing? Well, what can I say? Yeah, it's challenging. But once again, we're encouraged to be thankful and "continually gives thanks to God".
Now, the preacher-in-me would say at this point, "let's park right here". First, let's look at "In every situation be thankful". Huh?? Really?? Come on God, in EVERY situation? How am I suppose to do that? Well my friend, God wants us to be thankful IN everything; NOT FOR everything. You see, it's a mind-thing! Our mindset needs to be transformed by the power of the Spirit of God in order to accomplish this. How we think; what we think, is vital to our daily walk. Praise is a weapon that dispels the forces of darkness. Plus, I find that complaining just takes too much energy away. So just be thankful and you'll feel better!
"...continually give thanks to God;" Hold it right there! Are you saying that while I'm doing the dishes I should give thanks to God? While I'm driving my car I should give thanks to God? When I'm in the doctor's office I should give thanks to God? Yes- yes- and yes! Thank God for the ability to do the dishes. Thank God for having a car with gas in it and a working motor engine. Thank God for medical science that GOD USES to help promote our health and healing. YES - in everything, give thanks. Continually give thanks to God!! He deserves it!!
Dear one, every day IS a day of thanksgiving. Every day that we wake up to the sun shining and the birds singing. It's a day of thanksgiving. Every day that our loved ones are alive and safe, it's a day of thanksgiving. Every day that we can choose what we want to do, how we want to do it, and where we want to do it... it's a day of thanksgiving. And you know what else? Because God gave us this freedom of choice, it's a day of thanksgiving. We have the freedom to choose to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior or to reject him. The choice is up to you. I've made my choice - how about you?
