It's Fall and I'm starting to feel it ---yes, S.A.D., also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (a form of depression). This is a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year. Seasonal affective disorder occurs in climates where there is less sunlight at certain times of the year. Michigan is one of those prime areas.
It's so easy to start to feel a little less energetic, less joyful. After all, it's now the season of fall. Symptoms of S.A.D. include fatigue, depression, hopelessness, and social withdrawal. Treatment includes light therapy (phototherapy), talk therapy, and medications. This is very common with more than 3 million US cases per year. That's a lot of people.
Many find help in dealing through work, family or community. That's great! However, there are still those who do not have a strong support network. Maybe they are unemployed, retired, disabled. Many they are now empty-nesters, meaning all of their children are now grown ans gone out on their own. There are many scenarios but it all can lead to depression and loneliness.
May I offer some suggestions? Try spending more time with your family and friends. The pandemic has eased up now and we're now able to socialize as we did before. How about babysitting? Dogsitting? Take up a new hobby. Revisit your dreams from your youth.
Then, of course, there's church. If you're a member and not involved in a ministry, talk to God and your pastor about where you may fit in. If you're not a churchgoer, give it a try. know there are some wonderful and loving churches out there. I can vouch for that!
How about a support group? Again, there are some wonderful groups that can help support
you as you navigate through this time. I've started a virtual support group called The Rock Exchange. It's faith-based and centered on providing loving and biblical support with depression, anxiety, and chronic illness. It's named The Rock Exchange because we exchange our cares (rocks) with The Rock (Jesus). There we can receive needed help.
If The Rock Exchange sounds like something you may be interested in, you can visit the The Rock Exchange group page located on this website. Visit the pre-join questions section to determine eligibility. Administration will get back with you.
