Music and Mental Health

ree

I'm a musician. I play piano, organ, and I used to play flute. Music has always been fun for me. Inspirational. Even healing. I love most styles of music. Most, not necessarily all. But of course my fav is gospel.

How does music play into mental health? It plays a significant part in our lives. Think about it. When you're in the doctor's office, there's sometimes some nice, enjoyable music playing. Orchestrated pop music. This helps to relax your mind. Relieve any stress. When you ride an elevator its the same thing. Orchestrated pop music or even some soothing jazz. I like jazz too!

But again, why is music good for our mental health. Well, without getting too theoretical, music carries spirit. Music carries emotion. Music is a universal language. Have you noticed how you feel when you hear God Bless America? There's a sense of patriotism. A sense of pride. Listen to Michael Jackson and you wanna dance. Listen to classical and you are relaxed (or bored - smile). Listen to Mahalia Jackson and you wanna have church. Music is powerful!

Music I love to listen to varies. It depends on my mood. If I'm feeling good, I'll play something with an energetic beat - some Ricky Dillard or Donald Lawrence. They make my feet happy! When I'm feeling down, I play something that will change my mindset - lighten my feelings. That covers a wide range of music.

I write this because we've moved into a season of darkness. Both naturally and spiritually. Just as young David played his harp to soothe King Saul, we should play some music to soothe our hearts and minds. David wrote psalms to express joy. Let's relish the songs of joy. Feeling a little thoughtful? Some nice relaxing music can help. Music and mental health can work together.

Would you like to share the music you enjoy? What inspires you? Energizes you? Or even comforts you? Please comment and share with someone.

Enjoy living and keep looking UP!!!
